What to memorize (and what not to)
ITIL 4 Foundation is a definition and relationship exam. You will fail if you only memorize practice names. You will pass if you can pick the principle or practice that fits a short scenario.
Core model
- Service vs product vs value
- Four dimensions: organizations and people; information and technology; partners and suppliers; value streams and processes
- Service value system (SVS): guiding principles, governance, service value chain, practices, continual improvement
- Service value chain activities: Plan, Improve, Engage, Design & Transition, Obtain/Build, Deliver & Support
Seven guiding principles
Focus on value; start where you are; progress iteratively with feedback; collaborate and promote visibility; think and work holistically; keep it simple and practical; optimize and automate.
Practices (Foundation subset)
Know the purpose of the Foundation practices, especially: change enablement, incident management, problem management, service desk, service level management, service request management, continual improvement, information security management, relationship management, supplier management. Do not confuse incident (restore service) with problem (identify cause) with change (controlled modification).
2-week study plan
| Days | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | SVS, four dimensions, value chain |
| 4–6 | Seven guiding principles with scenarios |
| 7–10 | Practices — incident vs problem vs change vs request |
| 11–14 | 300+ questions + 2 timed 40-question mocks |
Total time: 12–25 hours. ITIL Foundation is short; the failure mode is mixing up similar practices.
ITIL vs the rest of ITSM
ITIL is framework literacy. Pair it with a platform cert if your job is implementation:
- ServiceNow CSA — configure the tool
- TOGAF 10 — enterprise architecture (different audience)
