ISC2 Certification Path 2026: CC to SSCP to CISSP to CCSP

ISC2 credentials are built around experience plus a broad common body of knowledge. You do not have to collect all four. Most people enter at CC or SSCP, target CISSP as the career cert, and add CCSP only if they specialize in cloud security.

The four ISC2 certs on CertStud

You can pass the exam first and become an Associate of ISC2, then complete the experience requirement. That is a valid path. Do not treat Associate status as “failed CISSP.”

Who should start where

No IT job yet: CC, then Security+ if job posts demand it, then SSCP or a SOC role before CISSP.

Sysadmin / SOC analyst: SSCP or Security+, then CISSP when you can document the years.

Already designing security or leading people: sit CISSP. CC is optional.

Cloud security engineer after CISSP (or equivalent): CCSP. Pair with a vendor cert (AZ-500, AWS Security Specialty).

What CISSP actually is (so you do not skip the ladder)

CISSP is a breadth exam across the CBK domains (security and risk management, asset security, architecture, network, identity, assessment, operations, software). It is not a pentest cert and not a vendor console cert. If you cannot yet explain IAM, logging, and change control in production, study SSCP or Security+ first.

Suggested sequences

• Career changer: CC → Security+ → SOC/admin job → SSCP or CISSP.
• Cloud engineer moving to security: Security+ or SC-900 → CISSP (when eligible) → CCSP.
• Manager track: CISSP then CISM (ISACA), not a second ISC2 associate.
