Entry (0–2 years)
ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) — free or low-cost on-ramp into ISC2; good if you cannot yet sit CISSP.

Microsoft SC-900 — conceptual Microsoft security, compliance, and identity. Not a SOC cert; excellent if you work Entra / Purview. SC-900 study guide.
Associate / practitioner
CySA+ (CS0-003) — detection, vuln management, incident response. Natural next after Security+.
SC-200 / SC-300 / AZ-500 — Microsoft security operations, identity, or Azure security engineering.
CEH — still appears on job descriptions; pair with hands-on labs. Not a substitute for practical pentest skill.
Professional / leadership
CISSP — broad CBK, experience requirement (or Associate of ISC2). Still the most recognized senior security cert. CISSP exam tips · CISSP vs CISM.
CISM — management and governance. Take it when you lead people or risk programs, not as a first technical cert.
CCSP — cloud security architecture; stronger after you already know one cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP) plus CISSP-level concepts.
SecurityX (CAS-005) — CompTIA’s advanced architecture cert (CASP successor).
What not to do
- Do not sit CISSP as exam one with zero IT experience.
- Do not collect CC, Security+, SC-900, and a vendor fundamentals exam in the same month — pick one entry story.
- Do not treat CEH as “offensive mastery” without a lab trail (Hack The Box, Proving Grounds, or equivalent).
