Understand how Tableau connects to, transforms, and models data

6-8 hours

Live connections vs. extracts (.hyper): when to use each, performance trade-offs
Creating joins: inner, left, right, full outer — how duplicates appear
Relationships (Tableau default): context-aware, no duplicate rows, recommended approach
Unions: stacking rows from the same or similar structure tables
Data blending: left join across different data sources, primary and secondary source
Managing data properties: renaming fields, changing data types, default aggregation
Creating field aliases and assigning geographic roles

Tableau Concepts + Full Review

Understand core Tableau concepts and exam-specific knowledge

Dimensions: categorical data (text, dates, boolean) — shown as blue pills
Measures: quantitative data — shown as green pills
Discrete (blue pill): individual headers/members, creates a pane or axis header
Continuous (green pill): range of values, creates an axis
Discrete dates: fiscal year, quarter, month as discrete categories
Continuous dates: full date on a continuous axis with a range slider
Default aggregation for measures: SUM; changing to AVG, MIN, MAX, etc.
Adding a dimension increases granularity; aggregation recalculates per dimension member
LOD expressions: FIXED (ignores view), INCLUDE (adds fields), EXCLUDE (removes fields)

Know Your Chart Types Cold

The exam frequently tests which chart type to use for a given scenario. Memorize: scatter plot = correlation between two measures, density map = geographic concentration, highlight table = cross-tab with color encoding.

Time Management

45 questions in 60 minutes means about 80 seconds per question. Flag uncertain questions and return. Most questions are straightforward if you have hands-on Tableau experience.

Download Tableau Public for free and practice actually building the chart types on the exam. Hands-on experience is worth 10x more than just reading. The exam tests practical knowledge.

Relationships vs. Joins — Key Differentiator

This is a top exam topic. Relationships are Tableau's default model (context-aware, no duplicates, lazy loading). Joins are physical table combinations (can create duplicate rows with multiple fact tables). Use relationships for most multi-table scenarios.
